My first breakfast in New Orleans was this King Cake (Galette des Rois) from La Boulange. It's a round flaky puff pastry filled with frangipane (almond paste). And the tradition is that there's a porcelain or plastic figurine hidden inside and whoever gets that figurine is King/Queen for a day and is obligated to buy the next King Cake for a gathering.

This cake was still warm when we all sat down to eat it and on the second bite, this porcelain figurine emerged from my slice. So rich and delicious, that more than the sugar buzz, I was on an even bigger butter buzz. Coupled with being Queen for a day I feel pretty lucky this Lundi Gras (fat Monday).
