art/design mags

These are one-of-a-kind, over-designed, cost-prohibitive (to both the publisher and reader) periodicals that I've collected over the years. They are special bundles of pages that arouse curiosity in a casual newsstand browser but fetishism in somebody like me.

I've always had a love hate relationship with printed matter - want it all, but don't know what to do with it once obtained...This particular collection started when I got my first job working for a production designer on a television pilot. In designing the look of the proposed detective series, my boss gave me her credit card and carte blanche task to get all "inspirational" interior design magazines I could find at the store. This is a dream shopping trip. You are allowed, no, directed, to purchase everything your heart desires with somebody else's money.

At the end of the project, everything got tossed or given away to anybody who cared.

NEST used every cheap trick in the book to entice you to pay a paperback novel's cover price for the pleasure of reading each issue. This issue has an actual tongue depressor, branded with the magazine name, glued to the cover. There are multiple page sizes within, with seemingly random patterns and margins customized for each article. It's really silly and I fell for it. And no wonder the magazine went bust not even a couple of seasons later. They were probably hemorrhaging money every printing.

Little white squares and cherries.
Bands of primary colors + black and Comic Sans.
Tasteful floral repeat.
Grass.

NEST seemed irreverent and refreshing back then. I treasured this issue wishing that more people took such risks in communicating ideas to the world. But these days, I feel like such risk no longer exists, at least in the printed page, therefore nobody is taking them. Everything is being done by somebody somewhere. For better or for worse, nothing is risky because anything is available to us all at any time.

I'm done with these back issues piling up in my library now, so I'm letting them go.
