pre & post breakfast

By 9:37 AM , , ,

What's worse than waking up at 4:30AM to take your friend to the hospital, I ask you.

Almost stepping on a dead mouserat* on the way to the bathroom after you've woken up at 4:30AM to take your friend to the hospital. That's what.

This has been my morning thus far. The two things I hate most, mouserats and death. In the darkness of early dawn I thought it was a slug, as slugs often make their way into my mud room. But when I shone light on the dark squiggly thing on my rug, I saw that it was a mammal-corpse after a heated torture-fest conducted no doubt by my virile cats. I'm sure it didn't take long for the little thing to expire. For that, I do feel badly for him. But I'm just thankful that it's neither running around in my house nor that it was delivered to me in bed.

So, I had to take H to the hospital at the crack of dawn. She has breast cancer and is getting the good, bad and the ugly all removed as I type these words. She was surprisingly calm and good-natured for somebody who's about to lose a piece of herself to a disease. But then again, she's always good-natured, which is something of a treasure when somebody's your friend.

I've been getting up quite early for weeks now so 4:30 wasn't too bad. However, this AM I was feeling pretty groggy. I want to play piano and send melodious energy her way while she's in the OR, but it's a little too early for that. It's still too early for a lot of things, least of which is being under the knife.

So since my day's a bit turned upside down already, I decided to forego breakfast and start the day with some bruschetta and top notch pomegranate balsamic vinegar. Now we're off to a good start.

Here's to your health and sound recovery, H. I'll see you in a few hours.

*A mouserat is something that isn't cute enough to be a mouse, but not ugly enough to be a rat. Chances are great that he's a rat, but mostly I'm in denial about keeping any sort of company with a rat. Ewww.

  1. i love the two pictures together.

    i hope H has a good recovery!

    1. It's the juxtaposition of "snuff film" & "food porn". I just realized that the spool of thread that I used as a prop to indicate the scale of the mouserat is often a prop in rodent related animations. Right? Isn't there always a spool of thread in mouse world cartoons??? Anyway, that thing was tiny. RIP.
